Bodily Fluids
One of the reasons why UV light is so important in forensic investigations its ability to detect human bodily fluids. Longwave UV light was the first light source to be used in the search for semen in rape cases, for example. UV light will also show up any other organic traces, such as saliva and urine.
Blood
Detecting blood stains is another important aspect of using UV light. Blood absorbs any UV light and becomes darker in appearance thanks to a chemical reaction between the luminol in the UV light and the hemoglobin in the blood. This allows forensic scientists to detect blood stains which have been washed away and those on dark surfaces.
Fingerprints
UV light is also important in crime scene investigation as it can detect fingerprints. When an area is dusted with fingerprint powder and then scanned with a UV light, any fingerprint impressions will glow bright orange. Any impressions can then be photographed and catalogued as evidence.
